Description

  • Define the technical vision and roadmap for Upstart’s cross-company pricing platform.
  • Lead the architectural evolution toward modular, reusable capabilities across Personal Loans, Auto, HELOC, and related products.
  • Design and improve Tier 0 and Tier 1 services with stringent latency, throughput, availability, and financial-correctness requirements.
  • Partner with machine-learning teams to establish reliable boundaries between models and production pricing systems.
  • Align engineering, ML, product, data, security, compliance, and business stakeholders on technical decisions and trade-offs.
  • Clarify service, API, configuration, and ownership boundaries across platform teams.
  • Evaluate language and runtime choices, including Python, Kotlin, Rust, and Go.
  • Reduce operational burden through improved testing, observability, failure isolation, incident learning, and blast-radius controls.
  • Guide technical-debt and platform investments based on business value, risk, and long-term return.
  • Conduct design reviews and prototypes, contribute to critical implementation decisions, and mentor senior technical leaders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, plus 8+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Track record of setting architecture and technical direction for complex distributed systems spanning multiple teams or products.
  • Deep backend engineering experience with production proficiency in Python, Kotlin, or Java, and ability to work in a predominantly Python environment.
  • Experience designing or operating Tier 0 or Tier 1 services with demanding latency, throughput, availability, and correctness requirements.
  • Strong understanding of APIs, modular or service-oriented architecture, containerization, AWS, and maintainable software design.
  • Ability to translate strategy into concrete designs, prototypes, debugging, and critical implementation decisions.
  • Strong communication skills and experience influencing cross-organizational decisions without direct authority.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers and developing technical leaders.
  • Strong product and business judgment across delivery, reliability, technical debt, risk, and investment decisions.
  • Preferred: experience with real-time decisioning, pricing, risk, fraud, payments, marketplaces, ML productionization, AWS, Kubernetes, microservices, event-driven systems, observability, Rust, or quantitative domains.
