Description

  • Own the databases that power Marqeta’s card issuing platform.
  • Automate the lifecycle management of AWS Aurora instances.
  • Collaborate with application teams to analyze and improve database performance.
  • Contribute to the technical vision for relational and non-relational database maintenance and cloud migration.
  • Design high availability and disaster recovery solutions for database architecture.
  • Work on platform architecture, database partitioning, sharding, and database footprint evolution.
  • Partner with engineers across teams to execute short- and long-term technical initiatives.
  • Perform root cause analysis, remediation, and documentation to reduce incidents.
  • Write clear design documents and communicate technical decisions and trade-offs to stakeholders.
  • Contribute to monitoring and alerting practices and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience as a backend engineer.
  • Bachelor's degree, or 7+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience with cloud-native databases, preferably AWS, including Aurora, MySQL, Postgres, DynamoDB, or MongoDB.
  • Experience with high availability, disaster recovery, and distributed systems including replication and failover.
  • Experience with IaC and automation/orchestration tools such as Terraform and AWS Step Functions.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, job runners, and deployment automation.
  • Solid understanding of database administration, including internals, query tuning, indexing, and performance metrics.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Experience with Linux commands and shell scripting.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools, preferably Datadog.
  • Strong ownership, continuous learning, and ability to work cross-functionally.
  • Nice to have: experience with logical/physical migrations and blue-green switchovers.
  • Nice to have: experience with database fleet management, AI tooling, and basic Java.
  • Nice to have: experience in payments or FinTech.
  • Nice to have: experience with ProxySQL and/or RDS Proxy.
