Description

  • Define and evolve long-term database and data infrastructure strategy.
  • Design architectures supporting significant growth in data volume and traffic.
  • Establish standards for database selection, modeling, partitioning, sharding, replication, consistency, availability, and data lifecycle.
  • Lead cross-team migrations, re-platforming, sharding, multiregion architecture, and scalability initiatives.
  • Identify reliability, scalability, capacity, and infrastructure-cost risks proactively.
  • Build self-service, observable, reliable database platform capabilities.
  • Develop strategies for capacity planning, archival, disaster recovery, and data growth.
  • Evaluate database technologies and make build-versus-buy and technology-selection decisions.
  • Partner with senior engineers and leadership on architecture and technical direction.
  • Mentor engineers and raise standards for database and distributed-systems engineering.

Requirements

  • Staff, Principal, or equivalent senior individual-contributor experience solving infrastructure or database problems across multiple teams.
  • Deep knowledge of database internals and distributed systems, including storage, indexing, partitioning, sharding, replication, consistency, transactions, availability, and failure modes.
  • Experience designing and operating production databases with multi-terabyte or larger datasets.
  • Experience with high-throughput systems handling 30K–50K+ operations per second, preferably at higher scale.
  • Production experience with multiple relational, NoSQL, and distributed database architectures.
  • Experience leading major architectural changes, migrations, or scaling initiatives across teams.
  • Strong understanding of reliability, capacity planning, observability, and infrastructure economics.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous technical problems into aligned, executable plans.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to influence without formal authority.
  • Programming experience in languages such as Node.js, Java, or Python; experience with databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, Elasticsearch, ClickHouse, BigQuery, Snowflake, or similar is relevant.
