Description

  • Design, build, and own large-scale backend services for high-volume data ingestion, transformation, querying, and downloading.
  • Develop REST APIs and cloud services supporting vehicle testing, data visualization, workflow automation, and enterprise data access.
  • Implement data management capabilities including access controls, schema validation, caching, partitioning, and intelligent file placement.
  • Design and maintain end-to-end data workflows from truck-side ingestion through processing, annotation, storage, and downstream consumption.
  • Architect and manage AWS cloud foundations for scalable storage, compute orchestration, and production environments.
  • Build metrics, schemas, dashboards, and visualizations using internal pipelines, post-processing frameworks, and Tableau.
  • Lead architecture discussions and define system interfaces, data models, and cross-team integration patterns.
  • Implement data lifecycle management and S3 storage tiering initiatives to reduce costs.
  • Participate in roadmap planning, architecture reviews, and long-term backend and data platform strategy.
  • Mentor engineers and interns, improve service reliability, and resolve operational alerts using Datadog and internal tools.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field plus 2 years of industry experience, or a bachelor’s degree plus 5 years of professional experience.
  • Professional experience building cloud-based systems on AWS.
  • Experience designing AWS architectures using Lambda, Step Functions, IAM, S3, and EC2.
  • Experience building high-throughput ETL/ELT pipelines for large-scale data processing.
  • Strong Python backend engineering experience and REST API design skills.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code and DevOps automation using Terraform, GitHub Actions, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience deploying scalable services with Docker, ECR, and ECS.
  • Knowledge of data modeling, distributed data workflows, data quality, and governance.
  • Experience building monitoring, KPI dashboards, alert pipelines, and failure-handling workflows with Datadog, PagerDuty, and Tableau.
  • Position is based at Blacksburg HQ but eligible for work from anywhere in the U.S.

Benefits

  • Annual salary of $145,600–$183,500.
  • U.S.-based remote work eligibility.
