Description

  • Design, build, and maintain backend systems and APIs for Wikidata’s query infrastructure.
  • Improve the reliability, observability, and automation of the Wikidata Query Service and related data pipelines.
  • Integrate Wikidata Platform services with other Wikimedia systems and data sources.
  • Collaborate with SRE, data engineering, and product teams to ensure stability and scalability.
  • Monitor production systems, respond to operational incidents, and resolve performance bottlenecks.
  • Support platform migrations and system upgrades, including triple stores and streaming ingestion.
  • Contribute to deployment automation, CI/CD workflows, and service instrumentation.
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and technical planning.
  • Document systems and share knowledge with the team and broader Wikimedia technical community.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience as a backend or platform engineer working on distributed systems or data platforms.
  • Deep understanding of database and/or knowledge graph representation technologies and standards.
  • Proficiency in Java, C++, or other systems languages; ability to set up, scale, and investigate systems is more important than expertise in a specific language.
  • Experience building and operating production-grade services with SLOs, including strong attention to scalability, performance, reliability, and other non-functional requirements.
  • Familiarity with modern observability tools such as metrics, logging, and tracing.
  • Experience with data processing systems such as graph databases, search indexes, or data processing pipelines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Commitment to learning, resilience, and contributing to a mission-driven engineering culture.
  • Experience with knowledge graphs or RDF/SPARQL is preferred.
  • Familiarity with streaming data systems such as Kafka or Flink is preferred.
  • Comfort with CI/CD pipelines and containerization tools such as Docker and Kubernetes is preferred.
  • Experience in open source or open knowledge communities is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Wikimedia technologies, Wikidata, or MediaWiki is preferred.
  • Ability to overlap working hours with UTC+1 to UTC-5, with team overlap between 14:00 UTC and 17:00 UTC.

  • Annual salary range of US$116,633 to US$181,243 for U.S.-based applicants, adjusted by location for non-U.S. hires.
