Description

  • Own the AWS RDS and Aurora PostgreSQL database fleet and set configuration baselines and operational standards.
  • Monitor fleet health, including replication, failover readiness, storage growth, bloat, and scalability.
  • Forecast compute, storage, and I/O growth and recommend cost and performance improvements to leadership.
  • Tune slow or high-cost queries using PostgreSQL performance tools and database diagnostics.
  • Work with engineers to identify and fix N+1 and other application-driven query patterns.
  • Review and improve index strategy, schema design, and PostgreSQL-native feature usage based on workload needs.
  • Partner with software engineers during design and code review to evaluate database access patterns before release.
  • Support safe schema and data change workflows, including zero-downtime migration and rollback planning.
  • Lead database-related incident response, post-incident remediation, and disaster recovery exercises.
  • Build observability dashboards, scorecards, and monitors for latency, locks, replication lag, and connection saturation.
  • Enforce least-privilege access, secure database configurations, and compliance logging and retention requirements.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on PostgreSQL administration experience in production environments.
  • Strong experience with AWS RDS and/or Aurora PostgreSQL, including parameter groups, snapshots, read replicas, and failover behavior.
  • Deep understanding of MVCC, autovacuum, bloat, locking, isolation levels, and PostgreSQL transaction behavior.
  • Proven experience diagnosing application-driven performance issues in high-scale production environments.
  • Ability to read EXPLAIN plans and translate analysis into query, index, or schema changes.
  • Experience implementing zero-downtime schema migrations and backward-compatible deployment strategies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience tuning Java/JVM applications and reviewing ORM-generated SQL such as Hibernate, JPA, or MyBatis is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Datadog Database Monitoring or similar APM-to-database correlation tooling is preferred.
  • Experience with Terraform or other IaC tools managing RDS/Aurora resources and parameter groups is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes-hosted application stacks and connection pool behavior at pod scale is preferred.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.
