Description

  • Lead an in-house initiative providing legal representation to youth challenging immigration detention.
  • Prepare and litigate habeas corpus petitions in multiple federal courts nationwide.
  • Develop legal strategies for detention challenges and maintain related samples, guidance, and trainings.
  • Train, mentor, and provide practice guidance to staff and pro bono attorneys seeking clients’ release from detention.
  • Collaborate with field offices, legal program leaders, and external partners to respond to client needs across the organization’s network.
  • Support and help design impact litigation strategy with the Senior Director, Legal Strategy and external partners.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda to guide litigation strategy.
  • Prepare, review, and file court documents; participate in discovery; and appear at hearings and conferences as needed.
  • Prepare FOIA requests and litigate, appeal, or challenge results when necessary.
  • Monitor policy and litigation developments, prepare alerts, and contribute to public engagement, advocacy, development, and pro bono partnership efforts.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor and current admission to any state bar.
  • At least 5 years of experience litigating immigration matters in federal district and/or appellate courts, including habeas experience.
  • Substantial experience in removal defense, preferably on behalf of children and/or detained clients.
  • Additional litigation experience, including class actions and mediation, is a plus.
  • Experience training and mentoring other attorneys.
  • Strong legal analysis and written work product under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Teams and Excel.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Experience working and communicating in a remote environment is preferred but not required.

  • Salary range of $91,413 to $114,267 per year.
