Description

  • Develop relationships with partner groups and provide legal support through research and drafting documents.
  • Collaborate with the Communications and Campaign teams to deliver rapid legal support when needed.
  • Support the Legal Director with legal capacity building, strategy development, and responses to partner requests.
  • Participate in meetings with external partners and local stakeholders to advance the team’s work.
  • Conduct legal research on relevant topics and present findings in meetings, briefing memos, and other materials.
  • Help shape and implement the organization’s legal strategy.
  • Contribute to support for grassroots advocates fighting petrochemical projects.
  • Adapt responsibilities based on the fellow’s skills and interests.

Requirements

  • Recent law school graduate with 0-3 years of experience, or participant in a state-approved licensure apprenticeship program.
  • A law license is not required for this position.
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental law, public health, and/or civil rights.
  • Experience with research and legal theory development in environmental, administrative, government, property, civil rights, human rights, and/or consumer law.
  • Strong interpersonal and time-management skills.
  • Cross-cultural awareness and ability to work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds, including in a virtual environment.
  • Ability to synthesize information from multiple sources into clear oral, written, or visual products.
  • Ability to respond to changing priorities, objectives, and situations.
  • Lived experience in an environmental justice community in Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, or West Virginia is highly desirable.
  • Spanish language skills are highly desirable.
