Description

  • Define the architecture, design, tolerancing, and down-selection of precision optical mechanisms and associated structures.
  • Perform mechanism-specific analyses, including structural, controls, thermal, and other engineering assessments.
  • Develop environmental test, qualification, ground validation, and in-flight performance validation plans.
  • Collaborate with optical and satellite bus teams to determine operating concepts and mechanism requirements.
  • Prepare and present design reviews to secure stakeholder buy-in and align hardware, software, test, and manufacturing teams.
  • Own and refine program deliverables and schedules throughout development and production.
  • Evaluate and select manufacturing equipment for specialty processes.
  • Partner with production teams to develop work instructions, in-process checkouts, and end-of-line tests.
  • Support the design, manufacture, integration, testing, and deployment of mechanisms for spaceborne optical payloads.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of hands-on laboratory or work experience in optics, laser technology, controller development, electromechanical mechanisms, or electrical/mechanical design or testing.
  • Deep experience with CAD and FEA software packages, such as NX, Simcenter, FEMAP, and/or Hypermesh.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with a programming language such as Python, Rust, C++, and/or MATLAB.
  • Experience designing and manufacturing flexure-guided mechanisms, preferred.
  • Experience designing voice-coil or piezo-driven mechanisms and integrating positional feedback, preferred.
  • Experience with electronic enclosure packaging of printed circuit boards for space applications, preferred.
  • Direct experience with fine-pointing or line-of-sight stabilization solutions for optical communications, EO/IR sensors, antennas, or telescopes, preferred.
  • Experience performing detailed mechanical analysis, including FEA, tolerance stack-up, kinematic modeling, and vibration/shock analysis, preferred.
  • Experience collaborating with electrical, controls, and optical engineers on multi-disciplinary performance loops, preferred.
  • Experience creating and maintaining detailed CAD models, drawings, and BOMs, with NX preferred.
  • Experience leading prototyping, assembly, integration, test, and environmental qualification activities, preferred.
  • Knowledge of control loops using feedforward and closed-loop sensors, including PID, adaptive, and model predictive control, preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of high-resolution encoders, resolvers, gyros, IMUs, and SIRUs for space applications, preferred.
  • Experience with NASA-STD-5017, SMC-S-016, and GSFC-STD-7000 for in-space moving mechanism assemblies, preferred.
  • Must be a U.S. person or otherwise eligible for a federally issued export control license.
