Description

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services that process financial transactions across 20+ countries.
  • Write clean, testable, production-quality code and participate in design and code reviews.
  • Build and consume RESTful and GraphQL APIs and design inter-service communication using gRPC, message queues, and event-driven architectures.
  • Design and optimize relational and non-relational database schemas for correctness, performance, and scale.
  • Own backend features end-to-end from scoping and technical design through deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
  • Implement security best practices across distributed services, including authentication, authorization, input validation, and data protection.
  • Integrate LLM API calls into backend services for product features such as spend categorization, document parsing, and natural language workflows.
  • Build reliable backend pipelines for AI-generated outputs, including validation, fallback handling, and graceful degradation.
  • Collaborate with AI and data science teams to integrate model outputs into production backend APIs.
  • Instrument services with logging, tracing, and metrics, participate in on-call rotation, and contribute to incident reviews and CI/CD improvements.
  • Work closely with engineering, product, compliance, and data teams across regions and time zones, with clear documentation and async collaboration.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience building and operating production systems.
  • Fluent in English for daily written and spoken collaboration with global teams.
  • Fluent in Spanish or Portuguese for collaboration with LATAM teammates, customers, and partners.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one backend language: Go, Python, or Node.js/TypeScript.
  • Experience designing and building RESTful APIs, microservices, and event-driven backend systems.
  • Solid understanding of relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimization, and data modeling.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, plus Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience integrating third-party APIs reliably in production, including error handling, retries, and observability.
  • Experience working on globally distributed teams across time zones and regions.
  • Comfort using AI tools in everyday engineering work, including integrating LLM outputs into backend services and using AI coding assistants fluently.
  • Experience in fintech, financial services, payments, or another regulated industry is a strong plus.
  • Prior startup or high-growth scale-up experience is preferred.
  • Experience with multi-currency systems or cross-border payment processing is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar message queue systems is preferred.
  • Global work experience across multiple countries and regulatory environments is preferred.
  • Fluency in both Spanish and Portuguese is a meaningful additional asset.
