Description

  • Design, build, and ship services and APIs for money movement and financial integrations.
  • Own backend systems end-to-end, including production code, support, and operational reliability.
  • Work on payments, settlements, reconciliation, and corrections involving customer funds.
  • Build and maintain compliance-critical workflows such as payroll integration, KYC/KYB, and sales tax handling.
  • Implement and support integrations with third-party payments, tax, and compliance providers.
  • Partner with product, compliance, and operations teams to scope work and deliver production-ready solutions.
  • Debug production issues and improve observability, reliability, and operational tooling.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to integrate shared systems and platforms.
  • Write clear, reliable, well-tested code that ships quickly and scales well.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience building and shipping production products or platforms.
  • Strong experience with services, APIs, and data-heavy workflows.
  • Experience working on financial systems, payments, or other high-correctness domains, or the ability to ramp quickly.
  • Comfortable owning systems end-to-end, including production support and operational work.
  • Experience working closely with PMs and cross-functional partners to deliver scoped work.
  • Pragmatic, execution-focused approach to engineering.
  • Clear communicator and collaborative teammate.
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails or a comparable backend framework.
  • Travel to Gusto's Denver office for onboarding is required.
  • For office-based employees in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City, work from the office is expected approximately 2-3 days per week; secure and reliable internet is required for approved remote work days.

  • Competitive base pay with stock equity (RSUs) additional to cash compensation.
  • Cash compensation targeted at $189,000-$236,000 per year in Denver and most remote locations.
  • Cash compensation targeted at $223,000-$278,000 per year for San Francisco, Seattle, and New York.
  • Full-time employees receive benefits as part of total rewards.
  • Flexible hybrid office expectations for employees based in office locations.
