Description

  • Lead initiatives to develop an industry-leading vector database offering within Elasticsearch.
  • Design and implement new vector search features, algorithms, and data structures.
  • Enhance existing vector similarity functionality and resolve complex bugs.
  • Improve Elasticsearch code quality, clarity, scalability, and performance, including system- and hardware-level optimization.
  • Serve as the subject-matter expert for vector similarity implementation and search relevance.
  • Collaborate with distributed engineers and open-source contributors on issues and pull requests.
  • Write modern, idiomatic Java for Elasticsearch.
  • Own projects from technical design through implementation and guide cross-functional initiatives.

Requirements

  • Experience implementing novel vector similarity techniques on a large-scale search platform or advancing academic research in vector similarity information retrieval.
  • Professional experience with vector similarity and vector databases at scale, including HNSW, IVF, or comparable algorithms and libraries.
  • Strong core Java skills, including data structures, concurrency constructs, lambdas, and the standard library.
  • Ability to work autonomously and drive projects, decisions, and results from start to finish.
  • Experience collaborating asynchronously across distributed teams and providing and receiving feedback on code, APIs, and technical approaches.
  • Experience with data storage technologies such as Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an empathetic, respectful, and transparent working style.
  • Proven ability to use AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code while owning outcomes.
  • Ability to collaborate across functions and transition between projects, codebases, and teams as priorities change.
  • Preferred: Elasticsearch, open-source, source-control, continuous-integration, data-storage, or cross-functional initiative leadership experience.

  • Base salary of $154,000–$243,600 CAD with no variable compensation component.
