Description

  • Provide senior executive leadership across multiple functional areas to advance Smarter Balanced’s mission.
  • Coordinate cross-office decision-making with the Executive Committee, advisory bodies, and the Governing Board.
  • Oversee organizational risk management, compliance frameworks, and institutional accountability.
  • Lead operational systems including finance, human resources, production planning, and quality assurance.
  • Monitor controls and continuous improvement processes to ensure product and service quality and reliability.
  • Oversee annual and multi-year budget development and budget revisions aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Supervise, develop, and mentor executive officers across External Affairs, Product and Strategy, Content, Psychometrics, Research, and Project Management.
  • Support organizational change, succession planning, and high-performing leadership teams.
  • Assume executive authority when the Executive Director is unavailable to ensure continuity of leadership.
  • Resolve escalated divisional issues and conflicts affecting organizational objectives.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Proven experience serving as an executive supporting state and national organizations in assessment systems.
  • Proven experience navigating complex political landscapes and building stakeholder relationships.
  • Proven experience scaling systems while maintaining accuracy, accessibility, fairness, and public trust.
  • Demonstrated success leading high-performance teams, managing change, and influencing others.
  • Proven experience leading and developing executive teams to align goals with organizational mission.
  • Experience fostering collaboration through organizational practices, services, and behaviors.
  • Proven experience establishing and implementing strategic plans to support mission execution.
  • Thorough knowledge of large-scale educational assessment and work with state staff on technical assessment solutions.
  • Thorough knowledge of state departments of education, federal K-12 assessment and accountability law, and procurement; general knowledge of state laws is also required.
  • Strong decision-making skills with experience using consensus-based processes and input from multiple constituents.
  • Proven ability to respond to unexpected, high-stakes issues with effective executive oversight.
  • Ability to travel 1–2 times per month.
  • Preferred: terminal degree in a related field (PhD, JD, MD, etc.).
  • Preferred: excellent communication skills and ability to tailor messages for diverse audiences and media.
  • Preferred: experience in business development, marketing, communications, and budget alignment to strategy.
  • Preferred: thorough knowledge of technology supporting educational assessment development and administration.
  • Preferred: knowledge of public sector performance management practices.
  • Preferred: experience validating new educational assessments.
  • Preferred: experience working collaboratively with governing or executive boards.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal history background check and employment misconduct disclosure process.
  • Must be able to work fully remote from a home/remote office under the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Must complete required UC compliance training within established time frames.
  • Must comply with the University of California vaccination policy.
  • Must maintain discretion and protect sensitive, confidential, and non-public information.
  • Must be able to travel nationally, up to 20% of the time, and work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to work for long periods at a computer with or without accommodation.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $211,900 - $237,760.
  • Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications, and experience.

  • Potential salary review after approximately three years, subject to review and approval.
