Description

  • Define Duo’s Japanese character profile, including tone of voice, personality details, and backstory, while staying consistent with the global character bible.
  • Write original plots and lead story development when needed.
  • Set and uphold Duolingo’s quality bar across all creative projects in the manga and anime pipeline.
  • Scout, brief, and select manga artists and illustrators that fit the desired look and feel.
  • Build and manage relationships with publishers and editors to launch manga projects.
  • Select and manage anime production studios, including contracts, budgets, schedules, and quality oversight.
  • Pitch to and build relationships with TV networks to secure broadcast opportunities, including a morning show slot.
  • Set visual quality standards for TV, streaming, and short-form formats.
  • Keep global and local stakeholders aligned and secure buy-in at key decision points.

Requirements

  • Hands-on manga editing or directing experience at a publisher, editorial production company, or IP firm.
  • Proven ability to develop original stories and write plots directly.
  • Strong editorial and directorial instincts for capturing and expressing a character’s voice.
  • Established relationships with publishers, manga artists, and writers, with a track record of getting projects made.
  • Working knowledge of anime production, including studio contracts, budgets, and value-driven quality delivery.
  • Existing connections with major TV networks and experience pitching concepts for broadcast slots.
  • Exceptional collaboration skills and a willingness to seek consensus and feedback.
  • Business-level English for collaboration with a global team, with strong written English required and spoken fluency preferred.
  • Experience taking a manga property through to anime adaptation (preferred).
  • Familiarity with social-native formats such as vertical, short-form, and platform-specific content (preferred).
  • Background in brand licensing, merchandise, or IP business development (preferred).
  • Experience with inbound or outbound IP localization, including foreign IP in Japan or Japanese IP abroad (preferred).

  • Base salary of ¥17,178,000 to ¥25,767,100 JPY.
