Description

  • Lead the design and implementation of Java backend services, APIs, and reusable components within the team’s scope.
  • Translate software requirements and design specifications into working, tested, and maintainable code.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level developers through pairing, design reviews, and constructive code review.
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain backend microservices and REST APIs in a cloud-native AWS architecture.
  • Own PostgreSQL schema design, query tuning, data access layers, and migration strategy for assigned services.
  • Design and maintain Elasticsearch or OpenSearch index structures, query patterns, and reindexing strategies.
  • Integrate services with AWS S3, SNS, SQS, RDS, and ECS, including logging, metrics, health checks, and deployment readiness.
  • Build and maintain GitLab CI/CD pipelines, unit and integration tests, and infrastructure-as-code in Terraform.
  • Participate in SAFe Agile ceremonies, sprint planning, backlog refinement, and Program Increment planning.
  • Support Tier-2 and Tier-3 production issue resolution, root cause analysis, and vulnerability remediation.
  • Author developer documentation for APIs, data models, deployment operations, and runbooks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or 3 additional years of experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional backend web development experience.
  • Deep hands-on experience developing production Java backend services, including modern Java features, concurrency, and performance considerations.
  • Experience designing and building REST APIs at scale, including authentication, authorization, input validation, error handling, and versioning.
  • Working experience with Python for backend development or scripting.
  • Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL or similar databases, including schema design, query optimization, indexing strategy, and migration management.
  • Hands-on experience with Elasticsearch or OpenSearch for search indexing, including index design, query tuning, and operational considerations.
  • Hands-on experience designing and operating containerized microservices in AWS, including ECS, RDS, S3, SNS, and SQS.
  • Hands-on experience with GitLab or equivalent source control and CI/CD pipeline design.
  • Working experience with Terraform for infrastructure-as-code, including reviewing and authoring infrastructure changes.
  • Experience authoring unit and integration tests and driving test-driven development practices.
  • Experience leading peer code review, mentoring developers, and improving technical quality on a team.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments and making architectural decisions within a scrum team’s scope.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Preferred: Experience supporting federal government clients, working in SAFe, using Spring Boot, event-driven architectures, AWS networking patterns, or AWS certifications.
  • Preferred: Experience with Tier-2 production support, SAST/DAST integration, container image scanning, and mentoring or interviewing developers.
