Description

  • Walk through COBOL repositories you have authored, explaining program structure, business logic, and design decisions.
  • Write, review, and debug COBOL programs, copybooks, JCL, and file-handling processes.
  • Evaluate AI-generated COBOL code for correctness, style, and maintainability.
  • Provide clear written feedback on AI-generated code.
  • Create realistic tasks and test cases based on mainframe and batch-processing scenarios.
  • Document legacy COBOL patterns and modernization approaches, including migrations to Java or C# and monolith refactoring.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of hands-on COBOL development experience.
  • Ownership of at least one meaningful public or private COBOL repository that you can discuss in depth.
  • Strong knowledge of COBOL divisions, procedural logic, PIC clauses, COMP/COMP-3, REDEFINES, and OCCURS.
  • Experience with JCL and at least one of CICS, DB2, IMS, or VSAM.
  • Experience with COBOL file handling, including VSAM, sequential, and indexed files.
  • Clear written English and the ability to explain code to non-experts.
  • Experience with IBM z/OS, Micro Focus COBOL, or GnuCOBOL (preferred).
  • Experience in banking, insurance, government, or another mainframe-heavy industry (preferred).
  • Exposure to legacy modernization projects (preferred).
  • Familiarity with Java, Python, or C# (preferred).
