Description

  • Build scalable systems for training and fine-tuning large-scale models to evaluate driving behaviors.
  • Work across data engineering, model development, and simulation to support ML evaluation systems.
  • Provide guidance on architectural decisions and technical direction for large systems.
  • Own large, complex systems and drive architectures that meet technical and business objectives.
  • Contribute to the production and optimization of machine learning models used to assess Waymo’s fleet.
  • Design and scale distributed systems across the ML lifecycle, including dataset generation, training, and evaluation.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to define performance and system-level requirements for large ML systems.
  • Translate product and business goals into measurable technical deliverables.
  • Ensure alignment across system components and evaluation workflows.

Requirements

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in machine learning infrastructure, including developing, designing, scaling, training, deploying, and optimizing large-scale ML systems from data to model.
  • 5+ years of experience in machine learning infrastructure preferred.
  • Experience contributing to ML tooling and frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow, or Ray, or similar tools.
  • Understanding of both user-facing APIs and internal framework workings.
  • Strong expertise in distributed training techniques, including gradient sharding and optimization strategies.
  • Experience using ML accelerator profiling tools to identify performance bottlenecks.
  • Experience in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or complex simulation environments preferred.
  • Familiarity with large-scale simulation platforms and their integration with ML training workflows preferred.

Benefits

  • Base salary range of $170,000 to $216,000 USD.
  • Eligibility for Waymo’s discretionary annual bonus program.
