Description

  • Own data quality, integrity, and usability across the Materials Lab’s thermal, characterization, chemistry, reliability, mechanical testing, and R&D functions.
  • Develop and implement engineering controls, calibration procedures, and quality systems to ensure consistent, accurate, and traceable results.
  • Train and mentor lab technicians and engineers on scientific principles, test methods, and best practices.
  • Learn new or unfamiliar test equipment quickly and use first-principles understanding to improve methods and interpret results.
  • Lead root cause investigations for anomalous or out-of-specification data and determine data validity.
  • Perform failure analysis on materials and components to identify failure modes, root causes, and material/design improvement opportunities.
  • Drive process improvement and new capability development, including introducing new test methods and optimizing existing techniques.
  • Develop, qualify, document, and transition new or improved test processes into routine lab operations.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects with clear schedules and deliverables.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to understand testing needs and deliver actionable materials data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience as an engineer in a materials testing or characterization laboratory.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one of the following: mechanical testing, thermal analysis, or materials characterization techniques.
  • Master’s degree or PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or a related discipline (preferred).
  • Deep understanding of materials science across metals, polymers, ceramics, felts, adhesives, and composites (preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects with clear schedules and deliverables (preferred).
  • Strong engineering judgment and self-motivation with a track record of driving projects independently (preferred).
  • Experience developing, qualifying, and documenting new laboratory test methods or processes (preferred).
  • Strong understanding of materials testing standards (ASTM, ISO, etc.) and statistical methods for data analysis (preferred).
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools such as Python, MATLAB, or similar (preferred).
  • Hands-on experience with equipment such as SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, spark OES, pycnometer, tensile/compression/fatigue testers, TGA, DSC, DMA, Gleeble, or similar (preferred).
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and work in a laboratory environment.
  • Must meet ITAR eligibility requirements as a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or otherwise eligible for required U.S. Department of State authorization.

  • Base salary range of $135,000 to $190,000 for Level 3.
