Description

  • Design computational materials science problems that can challenge a frontier AI model and be verified programmatically.
  • Anchor each task in a specialized tool such as ObsPy, instaseis, pyrocko, MITgcm, flopy/MODFLOW, GeoPandas, or similar packages.
  • Write Python reference solutions and provide any required input files, model definitions, or domain setups.
  • Define the correct numerical answer and the tolerance required for a solution to be graded as correct.
  • Test tasks against batches of parallel model attempts and adjust difficulty to achieve the target pass-rate band.
  • Refine scenarios, inversion parameters, and solver tolerances based on model behavior and task performance.
  • Collaborate with senior reviewers in the relevant subfield and incorporate their feedback to improve task quality.
  • Work on project-based assignments rather than permanent employment, completing tasks during active project phases.

Requirements

  • Degree in Material Science or a related field.
  • 2+ years of research, applied, or teaching experience.
  • Python proficiency for writing reference solutions.
  • Fluency with, or strong willingness to independently learn, at least one scriptable package such as ObsPy, instaseis, pyrocko, MITgcm, xmitgcm, flopy/MODFLOW, or GeoPandas.
  • Ability to design problems that genuinely require a specialized solver rather than generic data wrangling.
  • Strong written English at C1 level or above.
  • Open to part-time, non-permanent project work.
  • Ability to learn independently and get up to speed quickly if not already experienced with the listed tools.
