Description

  • Use and develop process modeling tools to select operating points based on operating cost, capital cost, and energy efficiency.
  • Update and optimize process models using design improvements, operational data, and material advances, including Aspen Custom Modeler models.
  • Translate process model outputs into equipment lists, sizing data, stream tables, pipe sizing, power demand, and vendor-ready specification sheets using Excel, VBA, or similar tools.
  • Convert model outputs into capital cost estimates and compare internal estimates with external design-firm estimates and vendor quotes.
  • Develop equipment cost bases, scaling models, and shortcut models for system-level techno-economic analysis.
  • Coordinate with drafters, designers, and external engineering firms to keep PFDs and P&IDs aligned with current process models.
  • Integrate design and equipment updates into the demonstration facility and support equipment selection, procurement, and cost reduction.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce energy use, capital expenditures, and operating expenses through process optimization and targeted engineering or R&D projects.
  • Collaborate with engineering, R&D, and project management on project workflows, data quality, life-cycle analysis, and environmental impact assessments.
  • Present modeling results, cost estimates, and process updates to leadership, investors, and other stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Degree in chemical engineering or a related field; a graduate degree is preferred.
  • 7+ years of post-undergraduate experience, or equivalent experience with an MS or PhD.
  • Experience performing techno-economic analysis for highly integrated industrial processes.
  • Hands-on process engineering experience in an industrial or chemical manufacturing setting.
  • Knowledge of modeling heat and mass transfer in porous materials.
  • Proficiency with Excel, VBA, Python, JMP, or similar analytical tools.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, troubleshooting, communication, reporting, and presentation skills.
  • Experience reading and generating PFDs, P&IDs, equipment lists, and instrument lists is preferred.
  • Experience with detailed design, equipment selection, or procurement is preferred.
  • Experience with cross-functional teams, engineering or R&D project scoping, startup scale-up, and communicating complex numerical results to nontechnical audiences is preferred.
