Description

  • Develop systems to detect field issues across Japan and other international markets.
  • Hire, mentor, and lead a small team of software engineers.
  • Build tools and monitoring systems for fleet health as Waymo scales to new software releases, geographies, and platforms.
  • Partner with Data Science, Onboard Software, Mapping, and other engineering teams to identify bottlenecks and design end-to-end solutions.
  • Lead strategic investments to improve diagnostic signal quality and scalability across Waymo’s geographies and ODDs.
  • Support the issue-identification and resolution lifecycle for real-world autonomous driving problems.
  • Help establish local expertise for Waymo’s expansion into Tokyo.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5-7+ years of hands-on software development experience building highly scalable, reliable, and performant systems.
  • 1-2+ years of experience directly managing and mentoring software engineering teams.
  • Strong system design skills and fluent coding ability in C++, Python, and SQL.
  • Ability to solve open-ended technical and system design problems with a structured, first-principles approach.
  • Professional or native-level fluency in both Japanese and English.
  • Growth mindset and eagerness to learn.
  • Preferred: deep familiarity with driving dynamics, local infrastructure, and road environments in Tokyo and Japan.
  • Preferred: experience in mapping, localization, geospatial engineering, or high-volume data pipelines in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or GIS.
