Description

  • Research and develop new machine learning models to improve prediction accuracy across marketing, pricing, servicing, monitoring, fairness, and loan products.
  • Design, prototype, and deploy models into production with robust and scalable implementations.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers and product managers to experiment with and optimize models for business outcomes.
  • Evaluate model performance, interpret business impact, and present actionable insights to stakeholders.
  • Explore novel algorithms and methodologies to keep Upstart’s machine learning systems current and competitive.
  • Mentor junior team members and help maintain a high-quality, production-ready codebase.
  • Contribute to the research, development, and deployment of business-critical models across multiple teams and applications.
  • Break down complex tasks into milestones and make tradeoffs to deliver projects on time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or quantitative discipline such as Math, Physics, Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, or Operations Research.
  • 2+ years of experience in machine learning or a similar field.
  • Proficiency in Python or other programming languages.
  • Strong understanding of statistical, probability, and machine learning theory.
  • Full-stack expertise in the modeling process from ideation to production, or deep expertise in either statistical modeling or machine learning.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to break down complex tasks into smaller steps and make sound tradeoffs to deliver on time.
  • Strong sense of intellectual curiosity, humility, and teamwork.
  • Master’s degree or PhD in a quantitative discipline is preferred.
  • Deep expertise in Python and experience with machine learning frameworks is preferred.
  • Experience leading or mentoring junior members in a technical team is preferred.
  • Proficiency in building and deploying machine learning pipelines and engineering architecture is preferred.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and ability to develop testable hypotheses is preferred.
  • Proven ability to meet high standards for quality and velocity with minimal direction is preferred.
  • Ability to use modern agentic tooling such as Claude Code and Codex efficiently is preferred.

  • Anticipated base salary range of $141,500 to $196,000 USD for U.S. remote locations.
