Description

  • Create the overarching concept and editorial theme for the inaugural issue.
  • Build a complete table of contents including features, departments, and recurring columns.
  • Establish voice, tone, and editorial standards to guide content decisions and maintain independence.
  • Generate story ideas grounded in municipal workflows and identify interview opportunities with clerks, election staff, records managers, and administrators.
  • Write and edit original feature-length stories, opinion/perspective pieces, columns, and lighter recurring elements (e.g., checklists, field notes).
  • Conduct or support interviews and synthesize source material into clear, compelling narratives.
  • Collaborate with designers to align story structure with print layout (pagination, flow, hierarchy) and adapt copy for heads, decks, sidebars, and pacing.
  • Edit and refine copy in layout, manage proofing rounds, and tighten/reorder content to make pages scan-friendly and readable.
  • Coordinate with print vendors on technical specs, paper selection, schedules, file delivery, and sign-off to ensure a polished final product.

Requirements

  • Proven editorial experience producing long-form and short-form journalism or trade publication content.
  • Demonstrated ability to think in themes, story structure, and editorial arc rather than a simple content calendar.
  • Strong reporting and interviewing skills with experience synthesizing interviews into clean narratives.
  • Plainspoken, confident writing and editing voice that avoids marketing copy and balances substance with readability for busy readers.
  • Experience collaborating with designers and printers and understanding how print layout affects writing (heads, decks, sidebars, pacing).
  • Track record of establishing editorial standards, maintaining accuracy and credibility, and owning editorial decisions.
  • Experience managing production workflows, proofing rounds, and final sign-off for print publications.
  • Availability to work on a contract engagement during Q1–Q2 2026.
  • Familiarity with municipal government or GovTech audiences is strongly preferred, and a portfolio of relevant published work is expected.
