Description

  • Own major Android features from technical decisions through release in collaboration with Design.
  • Write and review production code while providing actionable feedback through pull requests.
  • Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key product features.
  • Unblock engineers, consolidate duplicated solutions, and establish reusable shared components.
  • Improve development and release processes by reducing manual intervention and increasing automated verification.
  • Handle critical issues, manage feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA.
  • Lead planning and determine appropriate review and approval requirements across system areas.
  • Partner with Product, Design, and Engineering to communicate team constraints and influence decisions.
  • Mentor early-career engineers and provide opportunities for meaningful learning.
  • Identify recurring problems and improve the underlying systems to prevent them from recurring.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including team leadership or ownership of a major product area while remaining hands-on.
  • Advanced experience with Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, background services, music player services, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit.
  • Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background functionality.
  • Strong understanding of software testing, including test strategy and areas that cannot be effectively covered by tests.
  • Demonstrated ability to introduce engineering practices that remain adopted after implementation.
  • Experience influencing teams to change how they work and managing the friction involved.
  • Ability to determine appropriate review depth based on system risk and behavior.
  • Track record of building tools or systems adopted by the wider team.
  • Ability to explain how a team works with AI agents.
  • Product design intuition, user empathy, and motivation to improve Android UI/UX beyond specifications.
  • Excellent communication skills and strong self-direction.
  • Experience with Room, Custom Views, Canvas, Paint, or Jetpack Compose.
  • Open-source Android experience preferred; iOS, web, or NodeJS experience is a bonus.
