Description

  • Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of core gameplay AI systems.
  • Drive technical direction for NPC gameplay systems and AI frameworks.
  • Own large-scale AI features from concept through ship.
  • Identify and resolve performance, scalability, and technical design challenges across gameplay systems.
  • Partner closely with Design, Animation, Audio, and Production to define and drive AI feature goals.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance across cross-functional gameplay initiatives.
  • Help establish engineering standards and improve team-wide AI development workflows.
  • Mentor and support other engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and best practices.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional gameplay or AI engineering experience.
  • Proven experience owning large gameplay or AI systems in a production environment.
  • Experience architecting and implementing AI simulation systems and features from scratch using C++, Blueprints, and other tools.
  • In-depth knowledge of gameplay AI simulation systems, techniques, and frameworks such as Behavior Trees, FSMs, and Utility AI.
  • Demonstrated collaboration with designers, artists, and audio developers to refine AI behaviors and system tuning.
  • Ability to take ownership of major systems, maintain development schedules, and drive major implementation tasks.
  • Extensive experience with Unreal Engine, including gameplay AI authoring tools and extending engine feature sets with custom tech.
  • Experience with animation techniques for AI characters such as Animation Blueprints, Montages, Control Rig, and Motion Matching.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Experience mentoring and supporting other engineers is preferred.
  • A passionate eye toward delivering quality and highly tuned game feel is preferred.
  • Self-motivated and self-directing, with willingness to contribute beyond direct responsibilities is preferred.
  • Must be able to work remotely with legal residence in Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Texas, or Washington.

Benefits

  • Annual base salary range of $150,000 to $180,000 in Los Angeles.
  • Base salary may vary based on location, qualifications, experience, and relevant expertise.
  • Additional compensation may include bonus and benefits.
  • Remote work option for candidates with legal residence in several approved states.
  • Hybrid/remote work designation noted in the posting.
