Description

  • Define and drive the technical vision and architecture for backend systems powering Pinterest Assistant at scale.
  • Lead the design and implementation of core platform components, including orchestration, memory, personalization, context management, APIs, tool integrations, and backend infrastructure.
  • Drive foundational platform investments that improve developer velocity, reliability, scalability, and new feature enablement.
  • Partner with Product, Design, Frontend, ML, and Infrastructure teams to deliver a personalized multimodal conversational experience.
  • Shape the architecture for AI-powered applications, including retrieval, context assembly, tool execution, memory, and model orchestration.
  • Establish engineering best practices for production LLM and agent systems, including observability, logging, evals, safety, rollouts, and incident response.
  • Mentor engineers through architecture reviews, technical guidance, and leadership.
  • Make pragmatic architectural decisions that balance rapid iteration with long-term maintainability.
  • Influence Pinterest’s broader AI platform strategy through cross-team collaboration.
  • Stay current with advances in LLMs, agentic systems, and backend platform design and apply them to consumer products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of backend software engineering experience.
  • 3+ years as a technical lead driving large-scale distributed backend systems.
  • Strong backend engineering experience in Python, TypeScript, Node, or similar languages and ecosystems.
  • Experience building platforms or foundational infrastructure that help product teams move faster.
  • Strong understanding of modern model-driven systems and experience partnering with machine learning engineers on AI-powered products.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Familiarity with retrieval, ranking, personalization, inference, context management, or orchestration.
  • Track record of mentoring senior engineers and raising engineering quality across an organization.
  • Product-minded, execution-oriented, and comfortable leading in ambiguity.
  • Experience building AI-powered or LLM-based products at scale (nice to have).
  • Experience designing conversational AI, agents, tool calling, or multimodal systems (nice to have).
  • Experience with retrieval, ranking, recommendation, search, or personalization systems (nice to have).
  • Familiarity with embeddings, RAG, context management, or memory architecture (nice to have).
  • Experience partnering with Applied Scientists or Machine Learning engineers to productionize ML capabilities (nice to have).
  • Familiarity with evaluation frameworks, experimentation, and AI quality frameworks (nice to have).
  • Full-stack development experience (nice to have).

  • Base salary range of $208,592 to $429,454 USD.
  • Eligible for equity.
