Description

  • Lead, coach, and develop engineering directors and managers while building a scalable leadership bench.
  • Own workforce planning, hiring strategy, interview processes, career ladders, performance decisions, and retention as the team triples.
  • Define and protect engineering culture, working norms, career paths, recognition, and feedback practices.
  • Partner with product leadership to deliver roadmap priorities predictably while balancing technical debt, architecture, and capacity.
  • Establish engineering performance metrics and operating rhythms for delivery accountability.
  • Partner with the CTO to consolidate toolchains, development environments, and shared infrastructure across engineering platforms.
  • Implement documentation, shared practices, onboarding, and training to scale organizational knowledge.
  • Ensure engineering practices meet required security, compliance, quality, and reliability standards for government deployments.
  • Lead remote collaboration, core hours, meeting cadences, asynchronous communication, and on-call coverage across U.S. time zones and territories.
  • Represent engineering to executives, the board, customers, and cross-functional partners on planning, budgets, headcount, and vendor decisions.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years leading through managers and at least 3 years at director level or above.
  • Experience leading engineering at a small or early-stage company, including building structure while operating with limited process.
  • Proven ability to scale engineering teams through rapid growth, including hiring pipelines and interview processes.
  • Demonstrated people leadership experience developing managers, retaining talent, and handling performance and staffing decisions.
  • Experience leading fully remote engineering organizations across multiple time zones, including on-call coverage and operating cadences.
  • Hands-on background in cloud-native architecture, distributed systems, CI/CD, and DevSecOps.
  • Production experience with at least one of Rust, Go, or TypeScript and with AWS, GCP, or Cloudflare.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance and travel up to 25%.
  • Experience with edge or disconnected deployments, government or allied-government products, data or AI/ML platforms, platform/toolchain consolidation, engineering budgets, or an active TS/SCI clearance is preferred.
