Description

  • Manage and resolve day-to-day legal matters within delegated authority, escalating significant risks appropriately.
  • Provide privileged, practical legal guidance and recommendations to institutional leadership.
  • Oversee the portfolio of active legal matters, including assignments, deadlines, progress, and resolution.
  • Develop courses of action that balance legal risk, operational impact, and institutional priorities.
  • Improve legal workflows, templates, governance practices, and knowledge-management systems.
  • Review communications, policies, and initiatives for legal risk.
  • Draft legal correspondence, demand letters, and other legal communications.
  • Coordinate external counsel, including deliverables, deadlines, and legal strategy.
  • Advise on contract strategy and risk in partnership with Procurement and other functions.
  • Oversee responses to subpoenas, record requests, and legal holds.
  • Support legislative and regulatory initiatives through legal analysis and cross-functional coordination.
  • Partner with Compliance, Title IV, and Legislative and Regulatory Affairs teams.
  • Supervise and mentor the Contract Specialist and legal operations support staff.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law and good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.
  • At least 7 years of legal experience, preferably in higher education, healthcare, employment law, regulatory law, legislative affairs, or complex organizational advising.
  • Experience with contract law, legal risk analysis, and external counsel management.
  • Strong professional judgment, discretion, and ability to maintain attorney-client privilege.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including translating complex legal concepts into practical guidance.
  • Ability to collaborate across institutional functions and advise leadership on legal risk.
  • Experience providing legal guidance in a regulated environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with subpoena responses, legal correspondence, and governance practices preferred.
  • Successful completion of a background check and drug screen required.
