Description

  • Partner with Engineering and Product leaders to shape Monzo’s technical and product direction.
  • Provide company-shaping leadership across large engineering collectives and drive alignment to company priorities.
  • Stay hands-on in coding and architecture for complex, high-risk, or novel areas where it creates leverage.
  • Identify high-leverage opportunities and direct engineering effort toward the most impactful outcomes.
  • Mobilise teams around high-impact problems by creating clarity, alignment, urgency, and sustainable pace.
  • Lead architectural direction for complex systems and drive consistency and reuse across domains.
  • Raise technical standards by improving quality, reliability, and scalability across Monzo.
  • Mentor, sponsor, and develop senior engineers and future leaders.
  • Influence senior stakeholders across engineering, product, and the wider business.

Requirements

  • Track record of leading complex, high-impact systems across multiple teams, domains, or business areas.
  • Ability to think in multi-year horizons and identify future opportunities early.
  • Strong technical judgment combined with product and business awareness.
  • Experience with large-scale backend, distributed, or data-intensive systems.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguous problem spaces and helping teams define direction.
  • Ability to influence and align senior stakeholders.
  • Outcome-focused mindset with the ability to use data to guide decisions and iteration.
  • Enjoyment of mentoring and raising the bar for other engineers.
  • Experience with Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, GCP, React, or Feast is relevant to the role.
  • Experience at Principal Engineer level or equivalent hands-on engineering leadership is expected.
