Description

  • Design computational material science problems that challenge frontier AI models and have answers verifiable by code.
  • Anchor each problem in a specialized tool such as ObsPy, instaseis, pyrocko, MITgcm, flopy/MODFLOW, or similar.
  • Write Python reference solutions and provide any required input files, model definitions, or domain data.
  • Define the correct numerical answer and set an appropriate domain-specific tolerance for grading.
  • Test tasks in batches of parallel attempts and tune difficulty until the model succeeds only 10–30% of the time.
  • Iterate on waveform scenarios, inversion parameters, and solver tolerances based on model performance.
  • Work with a senior reviewer in the relevant subfield and incorporate feedback to improve task quality.
  • Ensure the problem truly requires a specialized solver rather than generic data wrangling or toy-data manipulation.

Requirements

  • Degree in Material Science or a related field.
  • 2+ years of research, applied, or teaching experience.
  • Python proficiency for writing reference solutions.
  • Fluency with, or strong willingness to independently learn, at least one scriptable package such as ObsPy, instaseis, pyrocko, MITgcm, xmitgcm, flopy/MODFLOW, or GeoPandas.
  • Ability to design problems that genuinely require a specialized solver.
  • Strong written English at C1 level or above.
  • Willingness to work on part-time, non-permanent, project-based assignments.
  • Ability to learn independently and ramp up quickly if you have not used the listed tools before.
