Description

  • Define and deliver well-scoped milestones for projects, and act as a technical lead on some team initiatives.
  • Build scalable backend software and create features that support Marqeta’s services and products.
  • Create and review engineering design documentation for small- to medium-sized components and features.
  • Own significant parts of a system component or feature, including design, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Independently write clear, maintainable, testable, and adaptable code with minimal bugs.
  • Collaborate with product stakeholders and cross-functional teams to choose technical solutions that deliver customer value quickly.
  • Identify gaps in systems or processes and propose plans to address them.
  • Improve systems, infrastructure, and engineering processes continuously.
  • Mentor and support less-experienced engineers by providing guidance and setting a strong example.
  • Participate in rotational on-call coverage and troubleshoot production issues as needed.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience as a backend engineer with a Bachelor’s degree, or 3 years with an advanced degree, or 8+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience building scalable software platforms.
  • Strong experience developing in Java.
  • Experience working in cloud environments, with AWS preferred.
  • Experience with SQL.
  • Experience with microservices architecture.
  • Experience with distributed systems.
  • Experience making technical trade-offs and navigating technical complexity.
  • Experience troubleshooting production issues.
  • Ability to decompose business problems into solutions with multiple interacting components.
  • Ability to build correct, maintainable software components.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills across diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional stakeholders to clarify ambiguity and identify technical blind spots.
  • Preferred experience in payments or FinTech.
  • Preferred experience with software delivery pipelines, CI/CD, Kubernetes, Docker, infrastructure as code, and observability tools such as Datadog.
  • Preferred experience with unit, functional, and integration testing.
  • Preferred contributions to technical blogs, public GitHub repositories, or open source projects.
