Description

  • Design, build, and operate production AI-powered systems and agentic experiences used by millions of customers.
  • Build foundational systems for AI experiences, including embedding infrastructure, voice AI pipelines, client-facing components, and integrations.
  • Integrate foundation models through APIs and open-source frameworks, including retrieval-augmented generation and vector search where appropriate.
  • Own projects end-to-end, from requirements and technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, observability, and iterative improvement.
  • Optimize systems for reliability, latency, and cost efficiency.
  • Collaborate with product, design, data science, and infrastructure partners to ship AI features end-to-end.
  • Drive engineering excellence through thoughtful system design, rigorous code review, and AI/ML production best practices.
  • Participate in the design and delivery of production AI systems and identify high-leverage technical opportunities.
  • Contribute hands-on to AI-native products across Instacart's platform.
  • Prototype bold ideas quickly, test rigorously, and turn concepts into scalable products.

Requirements

  • Proven senior software engineer experience building, shipping, and operating production systems at scale.
  • Hands-on experience with AI or ML in production, including shipped LLM-powered features or foundation model API integrations.
  • Experience owning services end-to-end, including CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and on-call participation.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to partner effectively across disciplines.
  • Willingness and ability to use AI-assisted development tools such as Copilot, Cursor, or Claude.
  • 5 to 8+ years of industry experience (preferred).
  • Experience building conversational agents, multi-turn dialogue systems, or agentic LLM applications (preferred).
  • Experience with STT/TTS or natural language interfaces, LLM fine tuning, ML transfer learning, model training, and model performance measurement (preferred).
  • Experience with embedding systems, vector search, or RAG using vector databases such as Pinecone, Weaviate, FAISS, or Elasticsearch (preferred).
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP, containers such as Docker, orchestration such as Kubernetes, and event-driven or distributed systems such as Kafka (preferred).
  • Demonstrated mentorship and technical leadership in cross-functional teams (preferred).

  • Base salary ranges from $192,000 to $242,000 USD depending on permanent work location.
  • Eligible for a new hire equity grant.
  • Eligible for annual refresh equity grants.
