Description

  • Own the technical strategy, roadmap, and goals for Single-Retailer Search, Cross-Retailer Search, query understanding, suggestions, and Ads on Search.
  • Lead and grow a senior engineering team while partnering with embedded MLEs and ML leads.
  • Drive top-line growth while maintaining a high quality bar for search relevance and ranking.
  • Champion the use of LLMs in search.
  • Partner with the platform team to design and ship next-generation search retrieval architecture.
  • Manage latency and reliability tradeoffs for a tier-1 search surface.
  • Invest in evaluation, AI-native debugging tooling, and ML foundations to increase experimentation velocity.
  • Partner with Product, Data Science, Platform, Ads, and retailer teams to translate ranking changes into business outcomes.
  • Hire, develop, and coach engineers while building an inclusive, high-trust team culture.
  • Contribute hands-on to technical and architectural decisions when needed.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of engineering management experience leading high-performing teams.
  • 10+ years of total engineering experience.
  • Direct experience building or leading search, recommendations, ranking, or other applied ML systems.
  • Familiarity with modern retrieval techniques, including neural/semantic retrieval, ANN, and LLM-based query understanding or re-ranking.
  • Strong technical depth across machine learning and large-scale distributed/backend systems.
  • Ability to earn the trust of staff-level engineers and set technical direction.
  • Track record of leading complex, cross-functional technical programs from strategy through launch.
  • Strong product and business judgment with the ability to connect ranking decisions to conversion and revenue metrics.
  • Ability to reason through tradeoffs such as relevance vs. latency and organic vs. ads.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with comfort bridging technical and non-technical partners.
  • Experience with ranking and personalization at scale, including multi-stage rankers, multi-task deep models, embeddings, and real-time/session-based features (preferred).
  • Experience operating low-latency, high-throughput services with strict SLAs, including on-call and reliability ownership (preferred).
  • Experience leading 0→1 or ambiguous product areas and aligning cross-functional teams (preferred).
  • Experience working with LLMs in production and with experimentation/A-B testing infrastructure (preferred).
  • Exposure to two-sided marketplaces, e-commerce, or ads-adjacent ranking problems (preferred).

  • Base salary range from $221,000 to $279,500 USD depending on location.
