Description

  • Design and build scalable, reliable systems for donor platforms, recipient payments, and crisis response.
  • Own end-to-end development of features and services from architecture through deployment and monitoring.
  • Improve CI/CD pipelines, developer workflows, automation, and test coverage.
  • Collaborate with product, operations, and data teams to deliver tools that support field programs.
  • Debug production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement long-term fixes.
  • Promote sustainable engineering practices through testing, documentation, and monitoring.
  • Help shape the technology roadmap with focus on scalability, maintainability, and recipient experience.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of industry experience creating production-quality software and systems.
  • Experience with backend architecture, including databases, cloud services, and APIs.
  • Experience building infrastructure for software deployment.
  • Proficiency with strongly typed object-oriented languages such as Java, C#, or Go, plus scripting languages such as Python or Ruby.
  • Strong ownership, autonomy, analytical ability, and communication skills.
  • Ability to explain technical trade-offs and collaborate with cross-functional partners.
  • English language proficiency.
  • Alignment with GiveDirectly’s values, including emotional intelligence, problem solving, project management, follow-through, and inclusivity.
  • Availability to meet with the East Africa timezone for at least two hours a couple of times per week and travel 1–2 times annually.
  • Preferred: Production experience with Python and AWS, plus payments or financial software and microservice/serverless architecture experience.

  • United States compensation: $157,500 base, $181,125+ target total compensation, and $21,393 benefits stipend.
  • United Kingdom compensation: £108,150 base, £124,373+ target total compensation, and £2,760 benefits stipend.
  • Kenya compensation: $91,500 base, $105,225+ target total compensation, and $8,453 benefits stipend.
