Description

  • Own the technical vision and roadmap for core Workflow and Function Runtime primitives in partnership with Product, Architecture, and platform teams.
  • Lead and grow multiple engineering teams responsible for highly available, horizontally scalable, and secure distributed systems.
  • Review designs, make architecture and technical decisions, and contribute hands-on code or incident support when needed.
  • Drive operational excellence for shared services, including SLOs, on-call, incident response, capacity planning, and resilience.
  • Optimize performance, reliability, and cost efficiency for long-running and bursty workloads at scale.
  • Define and mature platform APIs and abstractions that let product teams safely compose workflows and schedule functions.
  • Build a strong engineering culture centered on results, iteration, ownership, and technical judgment.
  • Collaborate across Product Management, Security, Infrastructure, Data, AI/ML, and other stage groups to meet diverse workload needs.
  • Recruit, coach, develop, and retain senior engineers and engineering managers.
  • Champion GitLab values in team planning, execution, and communication.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 4–6+ years in engineering leadership with multi-team or org-level scope.
  • Proven experience leading teams building core platform or infrastructure services such as workflow engines, function runtimes, control planes, or high-scale microservices.
  • Hands-on engineering leadership experience with meaningful architecture and design contributions, and comfort reading and writing code.
  • Strong background in scalable, multi-tenant distributed systems, including service decomposition, data partitioning, fault tolerance, and backpressure.
  • Demonstrated success operating mission-critical services in production, including SLOs, on-call, incident management, postmortems, capacity management, and chaos or DR testing.
  • Experience driving cost efficiency in cloud-native environments through profiling, performance tuning, right-sizing, and storage/network optimization.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, modern cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, and event-driven or async architectures.
  • Experience with function-as-a-service or serverless runtimes is a plus.
  • People leadership experience managing managers and senior or staff engineers, with a record of hiring, coaching, and building inclusive teams.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fully remote, globally distributed organization with excellent written and asynchronous communication skills.
