Description

  • Prepare and publish accurate, in-depth summaries of legislation scheduled for consideration by the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • Describe bill provisions and the intent of legislation in plain English for a broad audience.
  • Provide relevant background information on legislation and policy developments.
  • Summarize arguments made by supporters and opponents of controversial bills.
  • Post and update certain publications independently.
  • Closely follow the development of legislation and cover assigned policy areas.
  • Research major policy issues and maintain expertise in assigned policy areas and the legislative process.
  • Coordinate daily with teammates to manage coverage and responsibilities.
  • Build and maintain a network of sources on and off Capitol Hill.
  • Work evenings, nights, and weekends as needed to match the House schedule.

Requirements

  • Attention to detail and the ability to maintain accuracy under firm deadlines.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle long, unpredictable hours based on Congress’s schedule.
  • Strong analytical, writing, and research skills.
  • Ability to read and work with legislative text, the U.S. Code, committee reports, and related government documents.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely for a broad audience.
  • Understanding of the legislative process, especially House procedures.
  • Ability to conduct objective online research on policy and congressional issues.
  • Ability to collaborate with editors and other Legislative Analysts on large policy bills.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies.
  • Public policy experience and/or reporting experience covering the federal government, politics, or legislation preferred.
  • Knowledge of the federal budget and appropriations process is helpful.
  • Strong knowledge of Congress, politics, and the legislative process preferred.
