Description

  • Lead the UK Residency program and FRO pipeline, including sourcing research concepts, recruiting founding teams, running selection, and launching new FROs in partnership with ARIA and other funders.
  • Manage Convergent’s UK office operations and hiring, helping build the infrastructure needed to support a growing UK FRO portfolio.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for ARIA and manage the partnership strategically, including compliance and collaboration opportunities.
  • Develop and deepen relationships with UKRI, Innovate UK, DSIT, and other UK funding agencies and public-sector stakeholders.
  • Represent Convergent across the UK science and policy ecosystem, including conferences, convenings, policymakers, university leaders, and research directors.
  • Serve as a voting board member for multiple UK-based FROs, providing governance, oversight, and support on compliance and milestone delivery.
  • Shape Convergent’s UK/Europe expansion strategy with leadership, including partnership selection, program design, and localization decisions.
  • Support UK team building and organizational design, including direct management of new hires where appropriate.
  • Help FROs prepare competitive proposals and translate impact into narratives and metrics that support funding and long-term backing.

Requirements

  • Experience operating in both startup and UK science/policy environments.
  • Experience building teams, systems, or organizations from the ground up.
  • Deep fluency in the UK science ecosystem, including UKRI, ARIA, Innovate UK, university structures, and charity/nonprofit regulations.
  • Experience designing, running, and improving cohort-based programs, accelerators, residencies, or similar programs.
  • Ability to think strategically and handle day-to-day operational execution.
  • Board experience and comfort with governance, fiduciary responsibility, and difficult decisions; UK charity governance experience is a plus.
  • Strong network across UK research institutions, funding bodies, or policy circles.
  • Strong judgment under uncertainty and the ability to make decisions with incomplete information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills across formats such as grant applications, board memos, public writing, and social media.
  • Comfort working across many responsibilities in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
  • Bonus: experience at ARIA, UKRI, Innovate UK, or in a similar program role.
  • Bonus: track record of securing large UK government grants or supporting unconventional research models.
  • Bonus: relationships with top UK universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, UCL, or Edinburgh.
  • Bonus: experience with technology transfer or spinning out companies from UK universities.
  • Bonus: previous startup experience in the UK.
