Description

  • Review prioritized materials for organization, readability, terminology, precision, consistency, and accessibility issues.
  • Perform substantive, developmental, and copyediting to improve structure, sequencing, transitions, directions, explanations, and clarity.
  • Preserve the technical fidelity of mathematical concepts, multilingual learner considerations, evidence statements, criteria, and scoring guidance.
  • Identify and document substantive questions requiring review by EdReports content or subject-matter experts.
  • Apply consistent terminology, definitions, directions, examples, language conventions, and editorial decisions across materials.
  • Conduct quality control for grammar, syntax, punctuation, spelling, mechanics, usage, and editorial consistency.
  • Incorporate one consolidated round of feedback and complete a final editorial review within the 25-hour engagement.
  • Maintain an editorial style or decision log and provide edited priority materials, documented recommendations, and final revised materials.
  • Track hours, participate in limited project check-ins, and communicate risks or outstanding work before exceeding the project limit.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional writing and/or editing experience involving complex technical, research-based, educational, or specialized content.
  • Professional experience with both substantive/developmental editing and copyediting.
  • Strong ability to improve clarity, organization, readability, and precision while preserving accuracy, nuance, and intended meaning.
  • Exceptional command of English grammar, syntax, punctuation, usage, mechanics, and editorial conventions.
  • Experience identifying ambiguity, inconsistencies, terminology conflicts, unsupported wording, and subtle differences in meaning.
  • Experience applying style guides and maintaining style sheets, terminology guides, decision logs, or similar tools.
  • Ability to distinguish editorial issues from substantive questions requiring subject-matter expert review.
  • Experience collaborating with authors, researchers, curriculum specialists, or other subject-matter experts.
  • Understanding of K–12 education and educator audiences.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience.
  • Preferred: experience editing K–12 instructional materials, curriculum, assessments, education research, or instructional-material reviews.
  • Preferred: knowledge of mathematics education, especially early or elementary mathematics, and multilingual learner or English learner education.
  • Preferred: familiarity with plain-language, readability, inclusive-language, accessibility principles, and collaborative document-development workflows.

Benefits

  • Contract compensation of $100 per hour, up to a maximum of $2,500.
