Description

  • Develop and implement an integrated communications plan aligned with CALSTART’s mission, programs, and policy initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain consistent brand voice and messaging across CALSTART and its programs and initiatives.
  • Serve as a thought partner to program and policy leads to translate technical objectives into compelling narratives.
  • Proactively secure media coverage and build relationships with journalists and editors across multiple outlet types.
  • Prepare press materials, talking points, op-eds, policy briefs, and briefing documents for leadership.
  • Manage media inquiries, coach spokespeople, and coordinate interviews and media events.
  • Own the creation of high-quality communications content, including press releases, blog posts, newsletters, annual reports, and case studies.
  • Oversee production of multi-channel assets such as presentations, fact sheets, social content, and website copy in collaboration with internal teams and vendors.
  • Lead storytelling efforts for program successes, deployments, policy wins, and research findings.
  • Plan and execute events, briefings, roundtables, and webinars for key stakeholders.
  • Develop and track communications KPIs, monitor analytics, and adjust tactics to improve reach and engagement.
  • Ensure compliance with donor communications policies and disclosure requirements for funded programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Communications, Public Affairs, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field preferred.
  • 7–10+ years of experience in communications, public relations, or related roles.
  • Experience in automotive, clean transportation, or nonprofit sectors strongly preferred.
  • Experience promoting policy initiatives at the federal, state, or local level required.
  • Exemplary writing and storytelling ability with a portfolio of press materials, op-eds, reports, or briefs.
  • Strong media relations skills with proven success securing coverage and managing crises.
  • Ability to translate technical topics into clear, accessible messaging for diverse audiences.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment with a proactive, problem-solving mindset.
  • Hands-on approach with willingness to contribute directly to writing, editing, and project execution.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally, collaborate effectively, and influence without formal authority.

  • Salary range of $95,000 to $113,000 per year.
