Description

  • Lead and supervise Legal Research Officers providing research support on internet/DLT law and its application to renewable energy, carbon trading, forest monitoring, and natural resource management.
  • Drive the end-to-end legal research process, including independent research, analytical leadership, and publication of findings.
  • Set the research agenda across the organization and provide technical and strategic leadership for analytical research programs.
  • Generate and manage opportunities for strategic research collaborations and knowledge partnerships with governments, UN agencies, legislators, and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute as a member of the Executive Committee to anticipate and respond to the organization’s tactical and strategic needs.
  • Manage the Research Division’s time budget and resource allocation to deliver organizational objectives and meet deadlines.
  • Produce briefing materials, PowerPoint decks, and presentations for clients, conferences, and policy audiences, and represent BCI at conferences and events to communicate research insights.
  • Support fellowship councils and other internal teams with legal research and turn research outputs into actionable policy impact.

Requirements

  • Academic legal research experience with a track record of published research is required; candidates who are practising lawyers without prior legal research experience in digital technology or climate law should not apply.
  • Strong experience developing and managing academic legal research projects, including large-scale, long-term thematic research.
  • Proven leadership and management experience, including managing staff performance, building strategic capacity in teams, and evidence of sustained international leadership.
  • Experience in strategic and operational management, planning, financial planning, and resource allocation for research programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate funded research or a well-developed understanding of relevant funding bodies, evidenced by a track record of funded research (preferred).
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills, strong presentation skills, and ability to produce structured research outputs for different audiences.
  • Ability to design, plan, and facilitate independent research, meet tight deadlines, and combine multidisciplinary expertise across teams.
  • Experience building and maintaining constructive relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders and generating partnerships.
  • High professional judgment, effective monitoring and decision-making skills, and the ability to deliver actionable results from research.
  • A relevant Ph.D. or training in academic research skills is preferred; proficiency in Microsoft Office and substantive knowledge of climate change, climate finance, blockchain technology and/or AI is desirable (candidates need not be proficient in both climate law and technology law).
