Description

  • Lead architecture and design for complex Datastore systems, weighing trade-offs with data-driven decisions.
  • Develop and evolve PostgreSQL data models, schemas, indexes, access controls, and APIs.
  • Design and operate Kafka-driven event pipelines, including replay, idempotency, and lag handling.
  • Build and maintain GraphQL APIs and third-party integrations supporting clinical and scientific workflows.
  • Own pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots to the data warehouse.
  • Debug and profile cross-system issues while improving structure, test coverage, tooling, and maintainability.
  • Partner with product, scientific, clinical, platform, application, and support teams on requirements and technical decisions.
  • Write RFCs, guide technical discovery, and coordinate complex development efforts.
  • Mentor engineers and improve team practices, documentation, dashboards, and operational tooling.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of backend development experience, including 3+ years with data platforms or backend data infrastructure.
  • Expertise in at least one area such as data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.
  • Strong SQL and production PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, indexing, query plans, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with Kafka or equivalent event-streaming technologies such as RabbitMQ, Pulsar, or Amazon Kinesis.
  • Proficiency in Python or Julia; Julia experience is preferred but not required.
  • Experience operating containerized services, with familiarity with Kubernetes and Terraform and/or Helm.
  • For the Datastore Systems focus: experience with GraphQL, TypeScript/JavaScript, Node.js, and end-to-end event-driven pipeline design.
  • For the PostgreSQL focus: expertise in query planning, EXPLAIN ANALYZE, schema evolution, zero-downtime migrations, replication, backups, pooling, vacuum, and extensions.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and improving team practices, tooling, testing, or documentation.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, experience working asynchronously or remotely, and interest in responsible LLM-assisted coding tools.
