Description

  • Design and implement secure integration interfaces using RESTful APIs, SOAP, message queues, and file-based patterns.
  • Develop data orchestration workflows using AWS services such as Lambda, Step Functions, EventBridge, SQS, and SNS.
  • Implement VA-endorsed interoperability standards including FHIR R4, CDS Hooks, and SMART on FHIR.
  • Build error handling, retry, dead-letter queue, and idempotency patterns for reliable distributed processing.
  • Transform and validate data to reconcile disparate source system formats and support cross-system coordination.
  • Create reusable integration patterns and libraries to support scaling across 130+ system instances.
  • Work with vendor-supplied containerized applications to identify integration points and API requirements.
  • Design fault-tolerant, multi-AZ, and horizontally scalable architectures with disaster recovery and failover capabilities.
  • Implement secure access controls, encryption, audit logging, and input validation for sensitive federal data.
  • Develop integration test suites, perform performance and security testing, and support RMF/ATO documentation and remediation.
  • Deploy and monitor serverless integration solutions using AWS SAM, CloudFormation, Terraform, CloudWatch, Secrets Manager, and Parameter Store.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional certifications and demonstrated experience.
  • 8+ years of software development experience with a focus on integration and API development.
  • 5+ years of hands-on AWS development experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in a senior development role.
  • Experience integrating with COTS/vendor applications rather than building systems from scratch.
  • Experience working with containerized applications and microservices architectures.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language: Python, Java, or Node.js.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services including Lambda, Step Functions, API Gateway, EventBridge, SQS, SNS, S3, IAM, Secrets Manager, and CloudWatch.
  • Experience with RESTful APIs, asynchronous messaging, event-driven architecture, and ETL workflows.
  • Knowledge of security and authentication practices such as OAuth 2.0, JWT, encryption, and input validation.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools such as AWS CodePipeline, CodeBuild, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins, including security scanning integration.
  • Basic understanding of infrastructure-as-code tools such as AWS SAM, CloudFormation, or Terraform.
  • Experience working with JSON, XML, CSV, and Parquet, including schema validation.
  • Experience with Git workflows, branching strategies, and pull request processes.
  • Experience with monitoring and debugging tools such as CloudWatch Logs, X-Ray tracing, and application performance monitoring.
  • Preferred: AWS Certified Developer – Associate or Professional.
  • Preferred: Experience with container troubleshooting and log analysis, including Docker and ECS task definitions.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of SQL and database integration patterns.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with Databricks or other data analytics platforms.
  • Preferred: Previous experience with VA systems such as VISTA, Cerner/Oracle, eRX, VDIF, JLV, CMOP, Meds by Mail, CRPCC, PBM, or VA Enterprise Cloud.
  • Preferred: Experience integrating VA-approved SAST tools into CI/CD pipelines and remediating high and critical vulnerabilities before production release.
  • Preferred: Understanding of NIST 800-53 security controls relevant to application development.
  • Preferred: Federal government contracting or DoD development experience.
  • U.S. citizenship is required due to federal contract requirements.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability Determination.
  • Remote work is allowed, with occasional travel of less than 10% as needed for project, client, collaboration, or training purposes.
