Description

  • Lead the drafting, structuring, and negotiating of complex commercial contracts with customers and partners in the automotive and mobility ecosystem.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the leadership team on legal matters critical to business growth.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Finance, Product, Engineering, and other stakeholders to lead key initiatives.
  • Support intellectual property, product, and compliance matters as needed.
  • Create forms, playbooks, and training materials to improve consistency, speed, risk mitigation, and scalability.
  • Develop and implement scalable legal operations processes, programs, and tools for the legal team.
  • Handle additional responsibilities as part of a small legal team in a high-growth startup.

Requirements

  • Qualification to practice law in Japan (Bengoshi), or an equivalent legal qualification.
  • Ideally a J.D. or LL.M. degree, with admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Fluency in both English and Japanese, written and verbal.
  • Experience structuring, drafting, and negotiating complex commercial agreements, including software licenses, strategic partnerships, and joint development agreements.
  • 5+ years of experience in the activities described.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, sales-focused environment with strong organizational skills and strict deadline management.
  • Experience supporting cross-border transactions, particularly involving U.S., Japan, and Korea-based stakeholders (preferred).
  • Experience working in the Japanese office of a U.S. or multinational company, or advising multinational clients in a law firm or in-house setting (preferred).
  • Experience with both law firm and in-house work (preferred).
  • Computer science, engineering, or other technical background (preferred).
  • Prior experience in technology, automotive, mobility, or other deep-tech industries (preferred).
