Description

  • Own the end-to-end architecture and two-to-three-year roadmap for Alpaca’s event streaming platform, including Redpanda, UTS, client libraries, and user-facing streaming.
  • Lead the transition from batch processing to event-driven architecture across Alpaca’s systems.
  • Design scalable real-time streaming systems addressing fan-out, slow consumers, backpressure, ordering, delivery guarantees, and market-day failure modes.
  • Set standards for schema evolution, topic ownership, replay, idempotency, versioning, and deprecation.
  • Own shared libraries used by multiple engineering teams.
  • Shape authentication and authorization strategy, including real-time subscriptions, token lifecycles, and multi-tenant isolation.
  • Partner with SRE and QA on chaos testing, game days, test tooling, and pre-production resilience gates.
  • Provide technical leadership through RFCs, design reviews, mentoring, and influence across teams.
  • Participate in Platform on-call and lead incidents involving shared infrastructure.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including several years operating systems at scale.
  • Strong Go experience or deep expertise in another strongly typed language with the ability to learn Go quickly.
  • Production experience architecting Kafka or Redpanda systems, including partitioning, consumer groups, rebalancing, retention, and delivery guarantees.
  • Experience delivering real-time client data at scale using WebSockets, SSE, or gRPC streaming.
  • Demonstrated ability to set technical direction across teams without formal authority and write effective RFCs.
  • Experience building or maintaining shared libraries, including backward compatibility and deprecation management.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers and improving engineering teams.
  • Deep expertise in at least one adjacent area: identity and access, developer tooling and CI, or testing and resilience.
  • Kubernetes experience beyond the basics, including Helm, security practices, and relevant professional experience or certifications.
  • Experience with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, and startup environments; familiarity with relevant preferred technologies such as Protobuf, Avro, FlatBuffers, CDC, OAuth/OIDC, JWT, Terraform, Argo CD, Grafana, or chaos engineering is advantageous.
