Description

  • Manage backend engineers across US and EU studios, including goal setting, feedback, hiring, and regular 1:1s.
  • Plan backend work by maintaining the backlog, estimating projects, and prioritizing sprints against the online services roadmap.
  • Set engineering standards for code review, testing, documentation, and on-call readiness.
  • Own service and infrastructure architecture, including boundaries, data models, APIs, and deployment topology.
  • Scope backend work, write technical designs, and implement and review proprietary backend services.
  • Align backend releases with the studio schedule, deploy hotfixes, and maintain CI pipelines and deployment automation.
  • Own monitoring, alerting, dashboards, runbooks, incident reporting, on-call operations, and incident escalation.
  • Load test services, resolve performance bottlenecks, optimize costs, and implement failover and disaster recovery.
  • Integrate studio services with 2K and external platforms and debug cross-service issues with engineering partners.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of server-side development experience and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience leading or managing backend engineers on a shipped AAA title, preferably a live-service or competitive multiplayer game.
  • Fluency in C# and proficiency in Python or Go.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, and scalable service design.
  • Hands-on experience with MongoDB or DocumentDB, Redis, and production services on AWS.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Helm, microservice architectures, and distributed-system performance optimization.
  • Experience with real-time messaging such as MQTT, API gateways, C++, or Unreal Engine.
  • Experience with online game systems such as matchmaking, social, progression, commerce, and telemetry.
  • Experience running a live title, including incident response, capacity planning, and cost management.
  • Strong communication skills, including giving and receiving direct, constructive feedback; legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.

  • California base salary of $169,100–$250,280 per year.
