Description

  • Develop importance sampling techniques to help evaluation pipelines produce stronger signals with fewer resources.
  • Identify useful signals in logs and simulations to more efficiently discover rare and important events.
  • Build systems that optimize multiple objectives under resource constraints.
  • Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, statisticians, and leadership to deliver evaluation products and support data-driven decisions.
  • Champion code health and best practices in a large, complex code base.
  • Contribute to automated pipelines that evaluate whether each new Waymo Driver release is safe before deployment.
  • Use statistical and machine learning methods to improve the efficiency of discovery pipelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Statistics, Physics, Math, or another quantitative field.
  • Fluency with probability and statistics.
  • Strong self-motivation to navigate complex systems and complete open-ended problems.
  • 5+ years of experience navigating and modifying a large code base across languages such as C++, Python, and SQL.
  • 5+ years of experience performing statistical analyses.
  • 5+ years of experience building data processing pipelines.
  • 5+ years of experience writing, reviewing, and merging code with attention to code health and maintainability.
  • 7+ years of industry experience, or 3+ years of post-doc experience, in a quantitative engineering role (preferred).
  • Proven technical lead experience driving the end-to-end experimental lifecycle in complex multi-language codebases (preferred).
  • Experience programming in C++ (preferred).
  • Experience developing and evaluating sampling methods (preferred).
  • Experience designing, training, evaluating, and applying machine learning models (preferred).
  • Experience working in the autonomous vehicle industry (preferred).
  • PhD in a quantitative field (preferred).

Benefits

  • Expected base salary range of $204,000 to $259,000 USD.
  • Eligibility for Waymo’s discretionary annual bonus program.
  • Eligibility for Waymo’s equity incentive plan.
