Description

  • Own the backend architecture end to end, including design decisions, standards, trade-offs, and documentation.
  • Defend the cloud-optional, privacy-first design philosophy and prevent feature creep that would undermine the architecture.
  • Lead technical design reviews and collaborate with firmware and mobile leads to keep cloud, Hub, and App layers coherent.
  • Define and enforce engineering standards for API design, security posture, observability, and code quality.
  • Design and implement the MQTT relay broker with Mutual TLS 1.3, UUID-based routing, and DoS-resilient connection handling.
  • Build and maintain the Installer Portal REST API, including account management, project templates, AccessKey lifecycle, credential verification, and handover workflows.
  • Implement the analytic ingest pipeline with server-side payload filtering and privacy-compliant retention rules.
  • Design PostgreSQL schemas and Redis caching strategies for installer projects, access control, and real-time sync.
  • Implement security controls across the backend, including OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, RBAC, rate limiting, and input validation.
  • Own the CI/CD pipeline from GitHub Actions through ECR and ECS Fargate, and support production and development deployments.
  • Integrate OTA firmware distribution with Hub state awareness so updates pause during handover lockdown states.
  • Drive observability using OpenTelemetry, Grafana Cloud, Sentry, and structured logging without exposing device payloads.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of backend engineering experience, with at least 3 years owning architecture in a technical lead capacity.
  • Proven experience designing and shipping a connected device backend or IoT cloud layer.
  • Strong experience with MQTT and/or AMQP at the infrastructure level, including broker design, QoS trade-offs, session management, connection resilience, and mTLS.
  • Experience with AWS IoT Core and/or custom broker implementations is valued.
  • Strong security-first engineering mindset, including Zero-Trust models, end-to-end encryption, RBAC, and IoT threat modelling.
  • Strong command of C# and .NET 10, including Clean Architecture, CQRS, async patterns, dependency injection, hosted services, and performance-sensitive REST APIs.
  • Experience with lightweight data access using Dapper or equivalent, with full SQL control and no heavy ORM.
  • Production-grade PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, advanced indexing, query optimisation, and lean schema design.
  • Redis experience for real-time state, pub/sub, session management, and Redis Streams.
  • Production container deployment experience with Docker and AWS ECS Fargate, including GitHub Actions → ECR → ECS pipelines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for design proposals, design reviews, and cross-functional stakeholder communication.
  • Experience with the Matter protocol is preferred, especially its implications for cloud architecture and Hub-centric models.
  • Familiarity with offline-first and edge-computing patterns is preferred.
  • Infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform or AWS CDK is preferred.
  • Background in privacy-by-design engineering, including GDPR-compliant pipelines and identity-free storage, is preferred.
  • Experience with background job processing tools such as Wolverine or AWS SQS + worker services is preferred.
  • Familiarity with event-driven messaging systems such as AWS SQS, Kafka, or RabbitMQ is preferred.
