Description

  • Design and implement research and analysis aligned with scientific, legal, and environmental protection standards.
  • Identify strategic opportunities for new research and novel policy analysis.
  • Lead or support science-based products on nuclear power safety and security trends in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Manage research and analysis projects from scoping and planning through execution, evaluation, budgeting, and coordination.
  • Write, edit, review, and help publish reports, papers, fact sheets, and policy briefs.
  • Coordinate peer review and tailor technical materials for technical and general audiences.
  • Apply research findings to public policy, regulations, and political strategy in support of program goals.
  • Track and assess the impact of work, monitor field trends, and apply learnings to advocacy and analysis.
  • Support campaign planning and implementation by identifying stakeholders, research questions, and policy opportunities.
  • Represent UCS in public forums, with media, policymakers, regulators, coalitions, and other stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain alliances with advocates, community leaders, researchers, businesses, and government staff.
  • Support fundraising and development efforts through donor meetings and advisory board engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field such as nuclear engineering or physics; Master’s preferred.
  • 7+ years of comparable and relevant experience, including academic-related work experience.
  • Experience in nuclear power plant operations is particularly desirable.
  • Familiarity with nuclear safety and security regulations and standards, including NRC, DOE, and International Atomic Energy Agency requirements.
  • Broad familiarity with nuclear power and fuel cycle safety and security topics, including operating light-water reactors and new designs such as small modular and non-light-water reactors.
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research and analysis; familiarity with tools such as MCNP/OpenMC, SCALE, MELCOR, and MACCS/HYSPLIT is desirable.
  • Experience conducting radiological consequence assessments of nuclear facility accidents is desirable.
  • Understanding of how science, economic analysis, and advocacy influence public opinion, public policy, and litigation.
  • Strong collaboration, relationship-building, coalition, legislative, advocacy, and policy/planning analysis skills.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate complex scientific topics to non-expert audiences.
  • Project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience centering equity, inclusion, and justice in work, including technical analysis.
  • Knowledge of racial equity and inclusion principles, with comfort discussing race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, ability, and related implications.
  • Ability to work occasional nonstandard hours and travel periodically domestically and internationally.
