Description

  • Design and implement research and analysis to advance the Nuclear Safety Project and the broader Climate and Energy Program.
  • Lead or support development of science-based products on nuclear power safety and security trends in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Manage research and analysis projects, including scoping, planning, execution, evaluation, budgets, contracts, and project coordination.
  • Write, edit, and review peer-reviewed papers, reports, fact sheets, issue briefs, policy briefs, and other program materials.
  • Coordinate peer review by internal and external experts and revise materials for publication and release.
  • Apply research findings to public policy, regulatory, and political strategies that advance program goals.
  • Track and assess the impact of UCS work, monitor emerging science and policy issues, and safeguard confidential supporter and ally data.
  • Support campaign planning and implementation by identifying decision makers, research questions, and policy opportunities.
  • Represent UCS in public forums, coalitions, hearings, regulatory proceedings, media interviews, and congressional or agency settings.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with advocates, community leaders, academics, researchers, and government staff, while contributing to fundraising and internal resource-sharing efforts.

Requirements

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in a relevant field such as nuclear engineering, physics, or nuclear chemistry.
  • 7+ years of relevant and comparable experience, including academic-related work experience.
  • Experience in nuclear power plant operations is particularly desirable.
  • Familiarity with nuclear safety and security regulatory standards and regulations, including NRC, DOE, and International Atomic Energy Agency requirements.
  • Broad familiarity with technical areas of nuclear power and fuel cycle facility safety and security, including light-water reactors, small modular light-water reactors, and non-light-water reactors.
  • Qualitative and quantitative analytical skills, with experience designing and conducting scientific research and analysis.
  • Familiarity with computer codes such as MCNP/OpenMC, SCALE, MELCOR, and MACCS/HYSPLIT; radiological consequence assessment experience is desirable.
  • Understanding of how science, economic, and technical analysis, and advocacy inform public opinion, public policy, and litigation.
  • Strong collaboration, relationship-building, project management, writing, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex scientific issues to both technical and non-expert audiences.
  • Experience centering equity, inclusion, and justice in technical analysis, and comfort discussing identities such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, and ability.
