Description

  • Build, run, and improve core backend systems with a collaborative engineering team.
  • Own systems end to end with a focus on quality, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
  • Lead work across the full development lifecycle, including design, estimation, implementation, testing, debugging, and deployment.
  • Ship code that impacts Toast’s growth and the daily operations of restaurant teams.
  • Partner with product and design to shape what is built and how it is built.
  • Contribute to team standards through code reviews and technical discussions.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to other team members.
  • Apply best practices for building and operating reliable systems at scale.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of backend experience with one or more object-oriented programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, or similar.
  • Experience owning and operating production systems.
  • A track record of solving ambiguous, high-impact problems with scalable solutions.
  • Ability and motivation to learn quickly and apply knowledge to real-world problems.
  • Interest in taking on challenging projects and building systems that operate at massive scale.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience with AI tools or enthusiasm for learning and using them in the workplace (preferred, based on company culture).

  • Base salary range of $125,000 to $175,000 CAD.
  • Additional cash compensation may include overtime and bonus or commissions if eligible.
